THE WORST - The Worst Of...

Location: New Jersey, US
Release: Parts Unknown Records, 2004

Recently, while going through the now defunct Parts Unknown back catalog, the ones responsible for putting stuff out by the likes of Omegas, Iron Boots, The Gate Crashers and so on, I decided to give a go on a discography CD release by a band called THE WORST. The name itself put me off many times in the past because there's a LOT of bands named after this but trust me when I say this is the best The Worst out there!!

RADIO RAHEEN, famous for re-releasing obscure first-wave hardcore stuff gave them the deluxe vinyl treatment last year with as 12-page booklet, the only difference from the Parts Unknown release is that they left off the 7-song unreleased LP from 1984, which is a pitty coz those rock hard, following the sabe vibe as their previous work from '82 and '83 EPs. FFO: F.U.'S, Jerry's Kids, Adolescents demos.

GET A GRIP - United Fight

Location: Arizona, US
Release: Criminal Records, 2020
Artwork: Gera Vega

Age of Quarantine, day # 259  - In fucked up times like this one, mankind reveals their raw nature, their best and their worst. GET A GRIP use all of that to spit venom and call-to-action in their new EP UNITED FIGHT!

Their inciting formula of thrashy skatepunk has reached its finest moment here, fierce music to match provoking lyrics! A few months prior to this they also put out a Promo Tape with 3 new exclusive songs that were left out of the 12".

SUDDEN IMPACT & 80's Canadian Skatepunk

It's hard to believe SUDDEN IMPACT is getting some (deserved) praise these days. From re-releases to reunion shows, not only them but the 80's Canadian rich underground scene in general are benefiting (at a certain extent) from current social networks, exposing them to newer audiences!

Through their not-so-extensive carrer, SUDDEN IMPACT's musical style went from this rad skatepunk in the early 80's to a ripping crossover sound as the decade unfolded, two of my favorite styles. All very catchy to the ears and easy to get pumped by!

They hail from Newmarket (near Toronto) and just the other day they performed live at this year's 77' MONTREAL FEST alongside Pennywise and many others. Both their LP's (No Rest From The Wicked and Split Personality) got reissued on CD with extras a few years back by Marquee Records from Brazil and it seems their demo Freaked Out will be pressed on 12'' for the first time by Supreme Echo!

Last year (aka 2018) they were also featured in this amazing book about the roots of Toronto Hardcore scene called TOMORROW IS TOO LATE with many other local bands. A limited 7" compilation was issued to go along with the book, listen to it here.

That right there is already another good source to dig for more great off-the-radar bands, but today we're going to focus and what I consider are one of the very best early Canadian's skatepunk groups and their respective albums from that era:

Starting off with MICRO EDGE, featuring one or two Sudden Impact members. They've put out a handful of demo songs dating back to 1983, Ugly Pop Records came along and released these songs on 12" format this very year, just gnarly! Those sold-out fast.

HYPE, another great act from that era, put out 2 albums in the mid 80's, the second one "Burned" being their best stuff. Also, just recently, both records got remastered and reissued on CD. Even though it can be, at a certain degree, debatable of what or where Skate-punk really stand as a music sub-genre I feel this band and SC.U.M. (sonically) falls right into what was being made in SoCal and Nardcore scenes at that same time, like B'LAST, J.F.A. and AGRESSION to name a few, all dubbed as skatepunk bands.

S.C.U.M. released one hell of a LP back in '85 "Born Too Soon..."! The cover art can be very unappealing but the skatepunk music is dead on! Their acronym means Society Controlled Under Murderers and represented an stance against the Montreal Police Force, as it's better explained here. This album got a needed reissue on CD with bonus tracks in 2006, including a version of the song Exit Death with their previous singer, previously featured in the comp It Came From The Pit from 1985!

DOWNLOAD I includes:
Sudden Impact - No Rest From The Wicked + Freaked Out Demo (Fringe Product/Diabolic Force, 1986)
Sudden Impact - Split Personality (Fringe Product/Diabolic Force, 1988)

DOWNLOAD II includes:
SC.U.M. - Born Too Soon... (Psyche Industry Records, 1985)
MICRO EDGE - '83 Demo
HYPE - Burned (Fringe Product/We Bite, 1987)

GET A GRIP - Running Out Of Time

Location: Arizona, US
Release: Criminal Records, 2019
Artwork: Gera Vega

Out 2 weeks ago "Running Out Of Time" the new 5-song EP by Tucson's GET A GRIP, a band that has been on my radar since day one!

Their unpretentious yet infectious 80's skate-punk influenced hardcore gets tighter and more authentic by each release, treading a path in harcore where very few are up to these days. For fans of The Faction, early McRAD, Attitude Adjustment, and A.N.S.

7" release party was strategically scheduled for April 20th, the record plus some shirts are up online in their store.

DANIEL WAX OFF! - Splits

Location: Scotland, UK
The two latest efforts from thrash skatepunks in Daniel Wax Off!, located around East Lothian and North Berwick in Scotland.

Two splits, 9 tracks in 17 minutes of fast 'n' fun thrashcore. By each record they get tighter and faster, I hold high expectations for their next release that may surface by the end of this year (2019). Lyrically they extend their love for pizza, booze and 80's movies like The Goonies, Gremlins and the classic THRASHIN'. Whats not to love here? Musically I feel they're somewhere between SSS, Bones Brigade and Intense Degree!!

As a bonus I included the tracks from their counterparts in the Tape split (Deathbus from Belfast) and Daniel's extra tracks from their split with Stabbing Device.

SABERTOOTH ZOMBIE - Human Performance Collection

Location: North Bay, USA
Release: Twelve Gauge, 2015

A release so rare that even the label doesn't recognize as legit lol! Actually this is a very-limited compilation of SABERTOOTH ZOMBIE's lastest four EPs, the Human Performance parts 1 to 4, a total of 11 songs.

When it comes to STZ is hard to describe their sound as they change from record to record, a true Hardcore chamaleon act, from thrashy punk to ass kickin' stoned jams! Anyhow, they always bring a far fom ordinary and pleasant listening experience, driven by an equally intriguing lyrical content.

Overall STZ have 15 releases and they still play shows ocasionally, so maybe this is not the end of this skillful group. If you are looking to grow an instant badass beard (women included) or a soundtrack for a late night skate session, wonder yourself through their great back catalog, I'd go with Midnight Venom and ..And Your Fathers LP for starters.

FFO: mad riffs, distilled beverages, the great outdoors.

AGENT ATTITUDE - Deranged Realities

Location: Uppsala, Sverige
Release: Monument / Adult Crash, 2014
Artwork: Gustav Oscarsson

2nd full-length by these swedish punk rockers. They keep it true and firmly rooted in 80's original hardcore punk formula, frantic and snotty. As I mentioned before, saw them live in Czech Rep. last year and they are the real deal.

3 records in 2 years? The right attitude and aptitude is definetly there. Deranged Realities gathers 12 new tracks still with that B'last/Germs intense skate punk feel which I can't get tired of. Both labels, Monument and Adult Crash did a great job with the whole package. Couldn't get an exact number of the pressing but it runs around: 30x opaque yellow / 400x solid black.

FIELDS OF FIRE - Keep It Alive

Location: Oxnard, US
Release: Phyte Records, 2001 (out of print)

I meant to upload this a long time ago, previous recordings from skate punks FIELDS OF FIRE. Fully charged nardcore hardcore, together as a band around 1999-2002.

4 years ago I uploaded 2002's Kill The Flock EP. In Keep It Alive they present 8 new tracks straight up nardcore style. It also features the 7 tracks from their first 7" The Kids Can't Be Bought EP (New Leaf Records, 2000), that shows their 80's youth crew influences.

Later they formed Annihilation Time/Lecherous Gaze.

All we've ever needed is in our hands or under our feet
It came in the shape of plank of wood with four wheels
A simpler time when we ran from cops, got picked on by jocks, and made new friends
There's no reason under the sun why all this fun should ever fucking end

Pushed further than our legs could take us
Smashed through walls that coundn't break us
Flew higher than we could hope to try
Acted like we would never fucking die

My God Rides a Skateboard Mixtape

4 years motherfuckers! GADEMM!! To celebrate the blog's anniversary I chose 3 friends and asked them to pick 4 songs each, songs to shred and burn on the sidewalk surfin'.

The last time I did a compilation was 2 years ago, the 2 Years Retrospective Compilation with a contribution from Arty Straight On View! Now here's 4 different takes on skate music:

MYSELF (aka Mene, Mariano, CcLaw, Dr.F-R ..)

00. CRISPUS ATTUCKS - MY GOD RIDES A SKATEBOARD [Spermbirds]
01. XFILESX - Long Boards Are Wrong Boards
02. BONES BRIGADE - Rock To Fakie
03. SSS - Purple Reign
04. SUICIDAL TENDENCIES - Go Skate!

Faço das palavas do Max Scholastic as minhas "[...]this is not just about how lame ESPN and the corporate take-over of skateboarding is; its also about some very wrong assumptions that most skaters hold. Skateboarding is not a sport. And guess what, IT IS a crime. Relish in that fact. Don't fucking get co-opted by your local city council when you're fighting for your 'legal right to skate'. Ever since I was in 4th grade I had to run from the pigs - deal with it. Enjoy the fact that you are DESTROYING  property that is owned by a bank, corporate office, post office, the federal government! That's what this is about, to fucking mark up their pristine ledges, stairs, curbs, rails, to destroy the rich's renovated pools. Fuck all of them!" - SHACKLE ME NOT

RICK PELLARIO (Clearview's vox, 90's skater and gym rat)

05. EXODUS - Hammer of Life
06. GOOD RIDDANCE - Heresy Hypocrisy Revenge [Fat Version]
07. PENNYWISE - X Generation
08. xJUSTICEx - Push It To The Edge

MARCELO BASTOS (dedicated LO-FI drummer and a Zorlac appreciator)

09. MUNICIPAL WASTE – The Fatal Feast
10. R.K.L. – Break the Camels Back
11. LAGWAGON – Foiled Again
12. ALL – World on Heroin [Live]

STEVE LIMA (legit old school skater and punk rocker)

13. CEREBRAL BALLZY - Sk8 All Day
14. MINUS ONE - The Kids Dont Skate Here
15. EIGHT DAYZ - Whats So Strange About Me
16. McRAD - Violin

F.O.A.D. Records did the CD version that also contains all their previous releases (only availabe on vinyl until now) limited to 1.000 copies. The LP version with Spoiler artwork is being handled by the dudes themselves and its limited to 100 copies.

FRESH TRASH - La Jungla

LOCATION: El Masnou, Barcelona
RELEASE: Sell Our Souls Records, 2010

Formerly known as Vicious Circle, we continue our "Spanish Invasion Week" here on All Things Old School with Fresh Trash's first full-length.

They don't go very far from yesterday's post (Good Fellaz), its 80's hardcore played with irreverence but with a Crossover thrash hint.

I really liked this album, starting by the artwork, a colorful display of monkeys bringin' it down, wild on the streets!! As for the sound, most of the songs can be described as a mix of RZL DZL and Bones Brigade, in a very similar way of what Dios Mio is doing in US. Hence they also sing in catalan, HHH also comes to mind.

Despite of all comparisons they developed something of their own and this should be a great soundtrack for all your shredding activities.

VICIOUS CYCLE - Self Titled EP

Location: Ontario, Canada
Release: Radio 81 Records, 2005 (out of print)

A great debut release from these canadian snotty punks (ex-PROVEN), lots of Negative Approach and Zero Boys influence in this first 7-songs-EP with some nice stomp parts, sounding very Lockin Out-ish!

After this they released 4 more EPs and 1 full-length, which is less agressive and more towards of a "conceptual" punk rock (not quite post-punk) but still very good and worth checking.

Soon more EPs from them here!
