all things old school: March 2011

Monday, March 28, 2011

Location: France
Release: Eternalis, 2006

If someone showed one of their songs to me and said it was new stuff from H²O, I would have said “Holy smokes, this maybe one of the best shit they ever recorded!”
The comparison here is inevitable, but Seekers of The Truth also comes from a long path in hardcore, in fact even longer (dated to ’88), releasing a few demos, EP’s and a full-length on Lost & Found Records.

After 7 years hiatus they came back full-force with a 3 track EP entitled Tinman. In 2009 they unleashed their 2nd full-length “2 Decades Shunning Masks”, which blew my mind.

They are also planning to release another blast of a record this same year, so stick tight!

The APEMEN - El Tortura

"Beware of the Apeman, for he is the devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport, for lust, for greeed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. SHUN HIM; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbringer of surf's death."

Monday, March 21, 2011

Location: Los Angeles

ATARI - Ten Years Strong

Location: Lehigh Valley, U.S.
Release: Broken Man Records, 2004

Discography from this "1997-era" hardcore / skate-edge band from from Pennsylvania. Straight forward positive music, taking their cues from Turning Point and Insted. This compilation includes their ‘Too Tired To Drive Home’ 7”, ‘We’ll Be Fighting’ 7”, and the ‘Skate Tuff’ demo tape, plus songs from their split with Carpenter Ant, and the ‘Growing Stronger’, ‘What We Share’, and ‘Rebirth Of Hardcore’ compilations, and finally a 9 song live set.

They started in 1994, broke up in 2001 and made a Reunion Show in 2004 when Broken Man Records released their discography CD that sold out quite fast, now a LP version is available again through act fast!

"JOYSTICK FURY" - November, 2004

Friday, March 4, 2011

Location: U.K.
Release: Carry The Weight, 2009

BALANCE - In Like a Lion

Location: Lund, Sverige
Release: Not Just Words, 2008

Balance started out late summer 2007 by 4 swedish kids with the goal to play fast and aggressive straight edge hardcore in the vein of Floorpunch, Straight Ahead and Carry On, to name a couple of their main influences.

Altough most of the lyrics on this first EP are quite cliché, like "say it to my face" and "stabbed in the back" kind of stuff (except the vegetarian one), they deliver it in a furious  way, making it one of my fav of 2008.

They already broke up, as some X's were broke in the process, but they promised to release a final LP to show how much they evolved since this first EP and appreciation for the hardcore.
